How to Measure up a Finger Guard for Kids

It’s really easy to measure up for a finger guards for kids – we even offer five different sizes. Each Thumbsie® finger guard is handmade and designed to help stop finger sucking.

Our finger guards fit over two fingers either the middle and the index finger or the middle and the ring finger. If when your finger guard(s) arrives it is not comfortable, too big or too tight please do not wear it.

Please note that we have recently changed our sizing so if you are a returning customer please make sure you re-measure your child’s hand.

Please use the diagram below and measure from the middle finger to the bend in the wrist as shown. Please ensure that you take care when measuring to get a good fit.

If you need the finger guard to be a little bigger then please order a bespoke finger guard.

All finger guards are secured by Velcro® around the wrist which helps make the child feel more independent but also means that no matter the size of their wrist, they should feel comfortable as they can be adjusted. If when your finger guard(s) arrives it is not comfortable, too big or too tight please do not wear it.

When measuring for a Thumbsie® finger guard, please bear in mind that the product will fit either hand, and any of the two middle fingers. We recommend your child wears the guard all the time, both day and night. For this reason, we suggest that you have three for each hand that they suck. We highly recommend our Stop Finger Sucking Bundles which will save money.

We first tried thumbsies a when my daughter was 3, it quickly became apparent that she wasn't ready. Having now turned 5 my daughter said she wanted to stop, so we gave it another go. This time it was smooth sailing and I think we could probably have stopped the thumbsies within a few days. However we kept them on during the week for about 4 weeks and a night for a few weeks longer until she asked to stop. She's absolutely smashed the finger sucking and as an added bonus has also stopped biting her nails at the same time.

My 13 year old daughter is using these. She has decided to try and stop sucking her thumb due to an orthodontist telling her she will be unable to have braces and she would benefit from these. She sucks her thumb for sensory reasons and when anxious and sucks for many hours a day. She has found them okay to wear, and this a really big thing for her, but just removes them to suck her thumb or doesn't put one on. We may buy more to be able to have more in handy places to put on, and would recommend them.

My daughter really didn't want to wear a thumb guard but being able to choose a design she liked, something that Thumbsie offers, helped her get around to the idea. The products are very well made out of soft material. They wash well. They are easy to take on and off but have enough velcro to make it difficult for my daughter to take them off in her sleep. The velcro helps them fit well so they don't just slip off like other elasticated ones do. They came pretty quick too. I would definitely recommend them and would buy again if I needed to.

Excellent service. We ordered a cat print thumbsie but sadly the fabric had gone out of stock. They got in touch to let me know and suggested a different cat fabric they did have (my little girl preferred!) She has used it for around 4-6 weeks now and it has totally cured her day time thumb sucking so no longer wears it. We have not yet tackled night time yet but planning to soon!

My 6 year old daughter has sucked her thumb since she was a baby and I was beginning to think we would just have to accept this. Any other way we’d tried to get her to stop had failed. However she kept asking us to help her and I came across Thumbsie. The many designs helped as she loves cheetah print fabric and she took to wearing it straight away at night. Eva has sucked her thumb since she was born, at night, when tired, when anxious ie a lot! I never thought this would work but it's been over 4 weeks now and she's not sucked her thumb once! I was sceptical about how these would work as my daughter has sucked her thumb since she was a tiny baby. She showed absolutely no signs of stopping, and she’s now 5, and would need to suck her thumb to get to sleep and whenever she was in the car or watching TV. My daughter sucked her thumb night and day. Having seen pictures of what it can do to your mouth as it grows, and being able to choose her favourite designs for a thumbsie (panda, fairy and love hearts), once the thumbsie was on she stopped sucking her thumb immediately, even at night. The reward chart enabled her to get something special after a week of not sucking, and the book enabled her to be proud of wearing it. The thumbsie was enough to remind her to not put it in her mouth without resorting to nasty chemicals. She is much more communicative now, and after wearing her thumbsies for 24 hours a day for a couple of weeks and then only at nights for a month or two, she now doesn't need to wear it at all and has completely stopped. Total success - thanks to thumbsie. We have recommended to several other parents.

My 6 year old daughter sucked two fingers from about three weeks old. Her dentist told her she must stop! We ordered a set of three Thumsies (for fingers) in March and initially used them in the day time at times when the fingers would go in. They were lovely quality and the pretty fabric meant my daughter liked to choose which one to put on. After a couple of weeks using the Thumsies and the star chart she broke the day time habit. Night time was definitely harder and there were a few nights when the Thumsie had to come off. It got easier and after 6 weeks or so the Thumsie was really just there as a reminder. It’s now July and we are Thumsie and finger-sucking free! A great result!

I'm still shocked at how well this product worked for our 3 year old daughter, even after reading all the great reviews myself. I'll be honest, when they arrived I thought 'how will this work, she'll just undo the velcro?' But she didnt; she was excited about her thumbsie's and there was no fuss at not having her thumb at bedtime (shocker!). The reward chart helped too. It took about 2 weeks until she didnt need to wear them during the day. We've now removed them at bedtime also and her thumb does not appear to be creeping back into her mouth. Thank you Thumbsie!

I decided to try Thumbsie to help my 5 year old stop sucking her thumb, following a recommendation from our dentist. She had sucked her thumb day and night from 3 months old. My daughter loved the Thumbsies, and enjoyed the attention they got at school. After just a few days of wearing them day and night I could see an improvement, and after 3 weeks we were amazed to find she had completely stopped sucking her thumb! This method helped my little girl, we got to the stage were her teeth were being affected from thumb sucking, becoming inverted and wobbly. So we invested in a thumbsie. She picked her design was so excited when it arrived, putting it on straight away, which wasn’t long after we ordered it. The delivery time was excellent. We charted her success daily. My 4 and a half year old daughter started sucking her thumb nonstop since she was 4 months!my husband and I have tried every trick to make her stop but nothing worked and it only got worse,,, until one day while I was trying to find any new different method that we haven’t thought of, I stumbled upon an article that recommended Thumbsie so I thought well let’s give this a try, and I must say whoever came up with Thumbsie is simply a genius!!!! Believe it or not the last time my daughter sucked her thumb was before she put her thumbsies on! She chose the patterns she liked and when we received them her dad read her the story and she got really excited about putting them on. The reward chart made this process a lot more fun too. Bought for myself as an adult who struggles with biting my fingers, thumbs in particular.Really finding these useful so far. They aren't uncomfortable to wear for long periods and they stop me from unconsciously biting my thumbs. Miracle workers! My little girl is 9 and could not break her thumb sucking habit, despite my best efforts. She chose the designs of her 3 thumbsies, which is a fab idea as it got her involved from the get go. It took a week for the habit to break! I was shocked it took such a short time. Our bespoke finger guards are designed to act as a reminder to children to help them stop finger sucking. If you have measured your child’s or teenagers fingers and you need them to be a little bigger then we are happy to make a bespoke finger guard for you.

If you need a specific colour to match a school uniform or your child has a favourite fabric and they can’t find anything on the website that they like then please do get in touch. Please note that due to license and copyright reasons we can not make guards from Disney or other licensed fabrics, sorry to disappoint.

We have had requests for a three finger guard and a four finger guard, which we were happy to adapt the design for. We have also created a fabric guard that will fit over the last two fingers. Finger guards fit on either hand are secured about the wrist with velcro. We can not create a finger/thumb combination though, if your child sucks both then we suggest a thumb and a finger guard are worn together.

If you order a bespoke guard then we cannot offer a refund or exchange as they will have been made especially for you. Please make sure you take time when measuring. If you think that you will need the finger guard to be wider, then please let us know. You can also supply your own fabric, we will need to advise on this.

Once we have agreed on the size and fabric please choose how many you wish to order. When you place your order please put any special request such as size and fabric in the notes section at checkout stage.

Please allow a little longer for these bespoke finger guards to be made.

Fits Like a Glove

The finger guard is worn like a glove, it fits over the middle two fingers (either middle and ring or middle and index) and is secured with Velcro around the wrist, so easily adjustable. The guard will fit either hand and will not limit the child’s ability to play or use their hands.

Material

Outside fabric: 100% poplin cotton or 100% cotton.

Inside fabric: Thumbsie® branded cotton fine warp satin.

We suggest washing by hand or in the washing machine at a low temperature.
