Thumbsie® is a family business with a conscience. Not only are we committed to helping children stop thumb sucking, but we also want to achieve that goal in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way.
That’s why we are proud to announce that we have changed all our packaging for 2022.
As a community-minded business, we have always been keen to “do our bit“, and the feedback from our customers has been amazing.
We’re not perfect, and would never claim to be, but we firmly believe that everyone – businesses and individuals alike – can contribute to protecting our world. Even the smallest change can make a big difference!
So, what exactly do these changes look like?
Well, the first change you’ll see is that all our mailing bags are now green – both in terms of colour and purpose. When that bag drops through your letterbox, you’ll see that the package is a lovely shade of green, and best of all, it is made of 100% recycled materials with biodegradable additive.
Wherever possible there is also less packaging: less to unpack and less to degrade the environment. All the cellophane bags that we use are biodegradable, too.
And it is not just the packaging. Jo, our founder, walks to the post office when possible, to personally post your Thumbsie packages. Good for the environment – and for Jo!
We’ll also have a very exciting promotion this spring, giving away wildflower seed bombs for children to plant. Watch this space.
Why is this important to Thumbsie®?
We believe that everyone has a role to play, no matter how small, in protecting our environment. The packaging we use requires less carbon to produce, reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill and ensures the earth receives the life-promoting nutrients that it needs. The manufacturing process is also more efficient and timelier, meaning that the negative impact industry can have on the environment is limited.
While updating our packaging is a big part of what we are doing, it does not tell the full story. We’re proud that our book, Thumbs up for Ted’s Thumbsie, is printed using environmentally sensitive methods.
The printing company we use, Hartgraph in Chesham, are one of just a handful of certified carbon balanced printers in the UK, meaning that they have measured the annual impacts of their fossil fuel usage, transportation and electricity consumption and ensured that this output is offset. This work is done alongside the fantastic conservation charity, World Land Trust (WLT)
WLT offset these emissions by protecting threatened habitats and wildlife, avoiding the release of stored carbon and enabling the regeneration of degraded habitats, which gradually re-absorb atmospheric CO2.
Sometimes, watching the news or reading about climate change can feel overwhelming, but at Thumbsie we are keen to help make a difference, no matter how small. We love the community we have built together with our customers, and we want to do whatever we can to keep it as green as possible. We’d love you to join with us and ensure that you dispose appropriately of any leftover packaging.
Thanks – and here’s to a greener 2022!
