Last year, we shared something very close to our hearts – our decision to sponsor a child through Akwaaba Volunteers.
Through this incredible organisation, based in Accra, Ghana, we’re helping to support Raphael, a bright and kind-hearted 12-year-old who is already making a wonderful impact in his school community.
But as a children’s health brand, we felt there was an opportunity to go a little further.
Extending Our Support Beyond Sponsorship
While sponsoring a child helps provide essential things like education, meals, and a safe environment, we also wanted to support children in another way — by sharing what we do best.
So alongside our sponsorship, we sent out a selection of Thumbsie products, including:
- Our thumb and finger guards
- Thumbsie “Thumbs Up for Ted’s Thumbsie” book designed to encourage children to stop thumb sucking
These were gifted to children within the programme who may be struggling with thumb or finger sucking habits.

Why This Matters
Thumb and finger sucking is something we talk about a lot here in the UK, but it’s a challenge faced by children everywhere.
And while it might seem like a small habit, prolonged thumb sucking can lead to dental and developmental issues over time — something we’re passionate about helping families overcome.
By sending these products, our hope was simple:
To give children access to gentle, supportive tools that help them build confidence and healthier habits — in a way that feels positive, not pressured.
A Shared Mission
What stood out to us most about Akwaaba Volunteers is how closely their mission aligns with ours.
Since 2016, they’ve been working to improve children’s lives through education, health, and community support, helping young people thrive and enjoy childhood as it should be.
That belief — that every child deserves the chance to feel safe, supported, and free to grow — is exactly what drives everything we do at Thumbsie.
Small Actions, Bigger Impact
Sponsoring Raphael is something we’re incredibly proud of.
But knowing that we’ve also been able to support other children, even in a small way, makes this journey even more meaningful.
Because whether it’s helping a child sleep better, break a habit, or access education — every step forward matters.
And sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.
