Sponsoring a child in Ghana: Thumbsie’s Support for Akwaaba Volunteers

At Thumbsie®, we believe that every child deserves the chance to simply be a child — to learn, grow, laugh, and play without the weight of adult burdens. This belief sits at the heart of everything we do. Whether we’re supporting families in ending thumb-sucking habits or helping children sleep more soundly, our goal is always the same: to nurture children’s wellbeing and give them the freedom to thrive.

That’s why we’re incredibly proud to announce that this year, we are supporting Akwaaba Volunteers, a dedicated charity based in Accra, Ghana. Since 2016, Akwaaba has been working tirelessly to create lasting change for children through impactful projects in health, education, and sports. Their mission is simple: to brighten the future for young people by providing the tools and support they need to succeed — and we are honoured to be part of this journey.

Why Akwaaba Volunteers?

The work Akwaaba Volunteers does resonates deeply with our ethos at Thumbsie®. They understand, as we do, that when you help a child access education, feel safe, eat nutritious meals, and participate in joyful activities, you’re not just meeting their basic needs — you’re allowing them to embrace childhood in its truest form.

By supporting one child for a year, we are helping to provide:

  • Daily transport to and from school in a safe environment

  • A clean school uniform

  • Two nourishing meals each day

  • Access to education

  • Regular physical and sporting activities

  • And most importantly, the joy and freedom to be a child

Meet Raphael

We’re delighted to introduce you to Raphael, the 12-year-old boy we’re sponsoring through Akwaaba Volunteers. Described as having a bright smile and a big heart, Raphael is already making a big impact in his school. He’s always the first to volunteer in and outside of the classroom, and his love for gardening even inspired the creation of a school garden project, where he now proudly serves as prefect.

As Jordan Palmer, Founder & CEO of Akwaaba Volunteers, shared:

“We’re so thrilled to officially welcome you as a sponsor, and we’re incredibly grateful for your generous support. Your kindness is truly transforming a life.”

We can’t wait to receive updates on Raphael’s progress at the end of every school term and see how he continues to grow and flourish.

Why This Matters to Us

At Thumbsie®, we believe that empowering children — whether through our own products or charitable partnerships — creates ripples of positive change. Supporting Raphael and Akwaaba Volunteers is a meaningful way for us to extend our mission beyond borders, reaching children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a carefree, safe, and supported childhood.

Because at the end of the day, every child deserves the chance to simply be a child. And we’re so pleased to be helping make that happen.

Children's oral health statistics in the UK

Many parents are concerned about their child’s oral health, and for good reason. While children are often attracted to sweet, sugary food and drinks, research has proven that these treats can cause long-term damage to teeth.
