How to Stop a Child Sucking Their Thumb – When Nothing Else Works

If your child sucks their thumb, you’ll probably know just how difficult it can be to break the habit. You’ve tried gentle reminders, rewards, distraction, encouragement and perhaps even a few tricks you’ve found online. But nothing seems to work.

You are certainly not alone!

We’ve been battling for 6 years with my daughter’s thumb sucking habit. We’ve tried everything and we were all left hopeless every time. Then I found Thumbsie – the only method that works with positive reinforcement.

Ivone – Trustpilot

Many parents search online for advice on how to stop a child sucking their thumb, hoping to find something that will finally help their little one break the habit. But with so much conflicting advice available, knowing where to start can be difficult.

At Thumbsie®, we understand exactly how that feels because we’ve been there ourselves.

Our story – why Thumbsie® was born

Thumbsie® started with a very personal experience.

When my youngest daughter, Izzy, was five, we were keen to help her stop sucking her thumb. Like many parents, we had tried just about everything. We reminded her, encouraged her, tried different approaches and hoped that eventually she would grow out of it.

But nothing worked!

I began looking for something that might help, but I couldn’t find a product that felt right. I wanted something comfortable, practical and child-friendly that would help Izzy break the habit without making her feel she was doing something wrong.

That was when the idea for Thumbsie® was born.

I created a soft, fabric thumb guard that Izzy could wear to help remind her not to suck her thumb. Most importantly, I wanted her to feel involved in the process rather than feeling that something was being done to her.

And it worked! After five weeks of wearing her Thumbsie®, Izzy had stopped sucking her thumb.

You’re not the only parent who’s tried everything…

What started as a solution for my own daughter has since grown into a business helping thousands of families, with Thumbsie celebrating over 13 years of helping children break their thumb and finger-sucking habits.

My husband and I have tried every trick to make her stop but nothing worked… until one day while I was trying to find a new different method that we haven’t thought of, I stumbled upon an article that recommended Thumbsie.

Why getting your child involved is so important

One of the most important things we’ve learnt over the years is that understanding how to stop a child sucking their thumb isn’t just about finding the right product. It’s also about helping your child feel involved, motivated and positive about making a change

Stopping thumbsucking shouldn’t feel like a punishment. It’s much more positive when children understand what they are trying to achieve and feel that they have some control over it.

That’s why we encourage parents to involve their child right from the beginning.

Here are a few ways to make it a positive experience:

  • Let them choose their favourite design. Thumbsies® come in a lovely selection of colourful fabrics and patterns. Whether they love unicorns, football, animals or something completely different, choosing their own design helps them feel excited about wearing it.
  • Explain why they are wearing it. Keep things simple and positive. Explain that their Thumbsie® is there to help them remember not to suck their thumb.
  • Celebrate the little successes. Every night they manage without sucking their thumb is an achievement worth recognising.
  • Use a reward chart. Our Thumbsie® reward charts gives children something visual to work towards and helps them see how well they are doing.
  • Be patient and encouraging. There may be setbacks along the way. Avoid making your child feel they’ve failed. Encouragement and consistency are far more helpful than pressure.

When children feel involved, they are much more likely to embrace the experience and take pride in their progress. We tried everything for many years… but nothing worked till we got the Thumbsie. My daughter loved being involved in picking the designs and within no time she stopped sucking her thumb.

Why we recommend having at least two Thumbsies®

One of our top tips is to have at least two Thumbsies® for each thumb or finger your child sucks.

This means you always have a clean one ready to wear while the other is being washed or dried. It also makes it easier to maintain a consistent routine, particularly if your child wears their Thumbsie® during the day and at night.

Our three-guard packs are particularly popular with parents because they provide a practical rotation of guards, with a spare always available.

You can choose your favourite fabrics, making it even more exciting for your child to wear them.

A little celebration goes a long way!

Breaking a thumbsucking habit is a big achievement for a child, particularly if they’ve been doing it for several years.

We believe it’s important to recognise that achievement and give children something to feel proud of.

That’s why we offer a special Thumbsie® Success Certificate for children who have stopped sucking their thumb or fingers.

It’s a lovely way to celebrate their hard work and mark the end of their journey. Parents often tell us how proud their children are to receive their certificate, and it’s something they can keep as a reminder of what they’ve achieved.

Trusted by parents and recommended by dentists

Since starting Thumbsie® in 2013, we’ve received wonderful feedback from parents who have struggled to find a solution that works for their child.

Many tell us they had tried everything before discovering Thumbsie®. Others had been dealing with the habit for years and were beginning to wonder whether their child would ever stop.

We’re also proud that Thumbsie® is recommended by dentists worldwide and is an approved product of the Oral Health Foundation.

Our aim has always been to provide a positive, child-friendly aid to help break the habit, rather than a product that feels restrictive or makes children anxious.

Thumbsies® are soft, comfortable fabric guards with an easy-to-use Velcro fastening. Children can remove them when needed, and parents can gently encourage their child to wear them as part of their new routine.

Every Thumbsie® is handmade with care, and helping children stop thumbsucking is still at the heart of everything we do.

When nothing else works, could Thumbsie® help?

If you’ve been trying to help your child stop sucking their thumb and feel as though you’ve exhausted every option, please don’t lose heart.

Every child is different, and there isn’t one approach that works for everyone. However, sometimes a little reminder, a change in routine and making your child part of the journey can be just what they need.

I started Thumbsie® because I wanted to help my own daughter, Izzy. I never imagined that one little idea would go on to help so many other families.

If you’re ready to try a different approach, we’d love you to discover Thumbsie®.

Because sometimes, when nothing else works, the right little reminder can make all the difference.

I thought I should try it, as I had tried practically everything else. I cannot thank them enough. My child has stopped sucking his thumb, including at night.
