Success Stories

Two weeks to stop thumb sucking from birth

Oskar has been thumb sucking since birth. He normally sucked it when he was tired or going to sleep at night. I purchased a Thumbsie® as another mum recommended it to stop a child from sucking their thumb.  Our family dentist had also said that Oscar’s sucking had started to affect his teeth. After a week of wearing his Thumbsie® he had broken the habit during the day so was just wearing the thumb guard at night.

Just two weeks after wearing the Thumbsie® we forgot to put it on one night; I went in to check on him and he wasn’t sucking his thumb. I tried a second night without his Thumbsie® and he didn’t need any sucking for him to settle down to sleep. A week on and he no longer sucks his thumb.

So that’s how to stop a child from sucking their thumb quickly and easily.

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for children, and often begun at or before birth. Sucking on thumbs or fingers may make babies feel secure and happy. Young children may also suck to soothe themselves and help them fall asleep.

Statistically, more girls than boys suck their thumbs and most children stop digit sucking on their own by the age of 4 or 5, but some find it difficult and some even continue into to adulthood.

One of the main problems with thumb sucking is that it can affect the shape and growth of a child’s teeth, their mouth and can even affect speech development. Once a child’s permanent teeth come in, sucking may cause problems with the alignment of the teeth necessitating unpleasant and expensive dental treatment. Some children who suck their thumb vigorously may even develop problems with their baby teeth as well as their permanent teeth.

You can stop all that happening to your child with a Thumbsie®.  Read our parent recommendations, or success stories, order your thumb or finger guard and stop sucking quickly, easily and happily.
